In March 10, 2025, the European Union Council in Brussels decided to extend its comprehensive economic sanctions and bans on key Russian energy products (specifically oil and coal) for another six months through the end of the year. The EU stated that the sanctions must continue as Russia's military action in Ukraine had not ceased.
Despite the fact that the sanctions also caused significant inflation and energy cost pressure on the European economy itself, the extension reaffirmed the Western commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty and the collective resolve to economically isolate Russia. For conservatives, the continuation of sanctions was a necessary tool to counter authoritarian aggression, but they also criticized European nations for failing to simultaneously accelerate the construction of energy infrastructure and lift restrictions on domestic energy production, thus leaving Europe economically vulnerable to Russian energy retaliation.
