October 30, 2025 - A majority in the European Parliament, comprising several key political groups, has voiced opposition to the European Commission's proposal for the next long-term EU budget, which is reported to be around €2 trillion – approximately €700 billion more than the current seven-year budget. In a joint letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the group leaders argued the proposal fails to guarantee that regional needs outside capital cities will be met, distorts the EU internal market and fair competition in agriculture, and warned that merging various policy pots into one large fund would diminish the importance of individual policy areas.

The signatories, including the leaders of the conservative EPP, social democratic S&D, liberal Renew, and the Greens, collectively holding 454 of the 720 seats, stated that Parliament could not accept the proposal as a basis for negotiations and demanded changes. The long-term EU budget, known as the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), requires unanimous adoption by EU countries and the consent of the European Parliament; if the necessary majority in Parliament is not reached, the proposal is deemed rejected.
