In October 2019, the U.S. Department of Defense awarded the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud contract to Microsoft, a potential ten-year, $10 billion project to modernize military IT infrastructure. The decision was widely viewed as an upset, as Amazon Web Services had been considered the likely winner. The outcome significantly strengthened Microsoft's position in the federal cloud services market and intensified its competition with AWS.

However, Amazon immediately challenged the award, calling the process "politically influenced" and citing "clear biases." This cast immediate uncertainty over the contract's future, with legal and procedural disputes expected to delay the Pentagon's cloud modernization efforts indefinitely.
