OpenAI Teams Up with SoftBank and Others to Launch "Stargate Project," Advancing Large-Scale AI Infrastructure Development

Artificial intelligence company OpenAI announced on January 21 that it has partnered with Japan's SoftBank Group, Oracle Corporation, and Middle Eastern investment entity MGX to launch the "Stargate Project," an initiative aimed at advancing AI infrastructure development.

In a statement, OpenAI explained that the project is designed to build the underlying infrastructure needed to support next-generation AI models, including high-performance computing power, large-scale data centers, and related energy and supporting resources. Positioned as a long-term infrastructure endeavor, the project is intended to support the development needs of future general artificial intelligence.

As AI models continue to expand in scale, driving rapid growth in computing power and data center demand, the global technology industry is accelerating its shift toward a "heavy-asset" infrastructure phase. Analysts note that the launch of the "Stargate Project" marks a significant shift in the AI industry, extending competition beyond software and algorithms to infrastructure and capital collaboration.
