On December 29, 2025, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution, extending the mandate of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) as a special political mission until January 5, 2029. The resolution reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, emphasizing that any act of terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable.
The Council expressed its continued commitment to enhancing the overall effectiveness of global counter-terrorism efforts. Established in 2004, CTED is a subsidiary body of the Security Council. Its core function is to conduct neutral, professional assessments of member states' implementation of Security Council counter-terrorism resolutions, identify gaps in their legal frameworks, enforcement, and capacity-building, and facilitate coordinated technical assistance to help states strengthen their counter-terrorism capabilities.
