On September 8, 2026, China reported that exports rose 25% year-on-year in August, while imports increased 28.2%, with strong overseas demand for high-tech and artificial intelligence-related products providing important support for the world’s second-largest economy. In the first eight months of the year, the value of high-tech exports rose 42.9%, semiconductor export values more than doubled, and car exports increased by more than 50% in both value and volume. China’s monthly trade surplus reached $119.09 billion in August, while the surplus for the first eight months totaled $805.51 billion, putting the annual figure on track to exceed $1 trillion for a second consecutive year.
The figures underscored the importance of external demand as domestic consumption and investment remained comparatively weak. Beijing has continued fiscal support, including measures to strengthen infrastructure investment, while seeking to stabilize foreign demand. At the same time, China’s expanding trade surplus remains a source of concern for some trading partners, including the United States and the European Union, adding to pressure for changes in global trade imbalances.
