BEIJING, October 14, 2026 — China's exports surged 36.3% year on year in September, the fastest growth since February, customs data showed, while the trade surplus widened to $133.53 billion. Imports rose 31%, accelerating from August's 28.2% increase. China's cumulative trade surplus reached $938.11 billion in the first nine months, putting it on course to exceed $1 trillion for the year. Semiconductor exports climbed 108.1%, while automobile export value and volume each increased by more than 50%, reflecting strong demand for high-tech goods and products linked to the global expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Robust overseas sales have supported China's manufacturers amid weaker domestic consumption and investment.
However, the growing surplus has intensified scrutiny from major trading partners, particularly the United States and European Union, over trade imbalances and industrial competition. The EU has recently reached an arrangement with China to limit imports of certain Chinese hybrid vehicles, while the People's Bank of China has rejected accusations that Beijing deliberately weakens the yuan to gain a trade advantage. Analysts warn that additional trade restrictions or a slowdown in AI-related demand could challenge export momentum. China's ability to sustain overseas sales while strengthening domestic demand remains an important factor for global trade and economic growth.
