FRANKFURT, October 21, 2026 — The euro zone economy has weathered this year's energy shock better than expected, supported by lower fossil-fuel dependence, stronger fiscal spending and investment linked to artificial intelligence, European Central Bank economists said in a published analysis. Oil and gas prices surged after the Iran war disrupted energy markets, renewing inflation concerns. However, the economists estimated that the euro area is now only about half as reliant on oil as it was in the early 1990s. Greater renewable and nuclear power generation has also weakened the link between gas prices and electricity costs in several countries. AI-related trade has provided additional support, with technology export orders and AI-linked sectors performing relatively strongly.

Fiscal support has also exceeded earlier expectations, reaching an estimated 0.5% of GDP, partly because Germany increased spending on defence and infrastructure. The economists cautioned, however, that these sources of support may not last. A slowdown in global demand, fading fiscal stimulus or weaker AI investment could leave the region more exposed to renewed geopolitical tensions and energy-market disruptions. Higher energy costs also risk fuelling inflation, complicating the ECB's monetary-policy decisions. The analysis did not announce a new interest-rate decision, but highlighted how structural changes in energy use, technology investment and government spending are shaping the euro zone's resilience. The outlook remains dependent on energy prices, external demand and the persistence of investment growth.
