European Commission Approves €6.1 Billion in Defence Aid for Ukraine; Zelenskyy Seeks More Funding

On August 24, 2026 — Ukraine's Independence Day — the European Commission approved €6.1 billion in defence assistance for Ukraine, to be used for the procurement of urgently needed missile defence systems, ammunition, and radar equipment. The European Commission stated that the allocation is part of the EU's €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan programme for 2026–2027. Previously, on July 30, the Council of the European Union approved amendments to the Ukraine Facility, allowing Ukraine to receive €8.3 billion in 2026 to cover budget needs.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told media representatives on August 23 that Ukraine still requires €30 billion in EU loans this year to cover its fiscal deficit, in addition to a $27 billion defence budget shortfall. The approval of the €6.1 billion military aid package comes amid ongoing tensions in Ukraine, with the EU's Ukraine Support Loan programme allocating a total of €30 billion in budget assistance and €60 billion in defence assistance for Ukraine over the 2026–2027 period. According to earlier reports, the European Union is expected to pay Ukraine approximately €20 billion by the end of 2026, with new tranches potentially arriving in the coming weeks.
