Mountain View, May 19, 2026 — Google unveiled several AI upgrades at its 2026 I/O developer conference, including the faster and lower-cost Gemini 3.5 Flash, while integrating AI agents directly into the search box. The company aims to attract consumers, developers and enterprise customers through the new features.

Google said AI agents can help users handle real-time tasks, generate code, answer complex questions and operate across applications. This means Search is shifting from an information retrieval tool into an AI entry point capable of task execution.

The company also introduced new subscription pricing and service tiers for developers, attempting to compete on cost with OpenAI and Anthropic. The expansion of Gemini users and AI-powered Search coverage is central to Google’s effort to defend its search dominance.

The I/O conference showed that AI competition is moving beyond individual model releases toward a broader contest over product distribution, pricing, developer ecosystems and user access points.
