NEW DELHI, October 10, 2026 — Indian police detained dozens of protesters and organizers in New Delhi as thousands of security personnel enforced restrictions on transport and communications to prevent a youth-led demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest, organized by the “Cockroach” youth movement, centered on allegations that revisions to voter lists could benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. The dispute followed media reports of disagreements within the election administration over the revisions. Election Commission data showed that about 130 million voter entries had been deleted or flagged during a verification exercise, including records associated with people who had moved, could not be traced or had died.
The commission said the figures included entries flagged at the draft stage and that eligible voters wrongly removed could register again. Both the commission and the BJP denied allegations of manipulation. Protest organizers condemned the detentions, while police had said the rally lacked official permission. Reuters witnesses reported barricades, closures at dozens of metro stations and a suspension of mobile internet in parts of central Delhi. The confrontation has renewed debate over electoral transparency, the right to protest and the independence of institutions in the world's largest democracy. The allegations had not been established by an independent judicial ruling as of October 10.
