TEHRAN, October 11, 2026 — Iran said the United States had not adequately addressed its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring continuing obstacles to efforts to end the regional conflict and restore safe maritime traffic. Mohsen Rezaei, a senior Iranian security official, said Washington's response, delivered through mediators including Qatar, addressed only part of Tehran's demands. Iran had outlined seven conditions during the United Nations General Assembly, saying the strategic waterway would reopen only after those requirements were met. Rezaei also said Iran was no longer engaged in ongoing exchanges with Washington on the proposal. The United States had not publicly commented on the latest Iranian statement.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a critical route for global oil and gas shipments. Disruption there can affect energy exports from Gulf producers, raise shipping and insurance costs, and unsettle international markets. Qatar and other regional actors have continued mediation efforts, but public information available on October 11 showed no agreement on a comprehensive ceasefire or a timetable for reopening the waterway. The impasse highlights the difficulty of reconciling security demands and political conditions while hostilities continue, leaving the prospects for a diplomatic settlement uncertain.
