On April 27, 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in St. Petersburg, pledging that Russia would do everything possible to bring about peace in the Middle East and disclosing that he had received a message from Iran‘s Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei. Following the talks, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Moscow would comprehensively analyze the messages conveyed by Araghchi together with signals received from the United States and Israel before deciding on its next steps, and did not rule out transmitting the opinions formed during the talks to Washington and other close partners.
On the same day, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stressed that Russia is willing to undertake mediation acceptable to all parties involved in the Iran conflict, and that renewing hostilities would not serve the interests of Iran, the states bordering the Strait of Hormuz, or the global economy. Earlier, on April 18, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had also articulated Russia’s position on the Middle East, calling for the immediate cessation of all military operations and the negotiation of mutually acceptable agreements. These coordinated diplomatic moves indicate that Russia is leveraging its privileged relationship with Tehran while simultaneously sending signals to both Washington and Tehran, seeking to position itself as a pivotal mediator in the rapidly intensifying Middle East conflict.
