On June 4, 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with heads of major world news agencies in St. Petersburg, where he explicitly rejected the role of European leaders as mediators in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, insisting that the framework established during his August 2025 meeting with US President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska could serve as the foundation for a peace agreement. Putin argued that EU countries providing military assistance to Ukraine cannot be considered neutral mediators. He stated that Russia is prepared to make compromises on Ukraine but needs to persuade Kyiv to believe this.
Putin emphasized the importance of Ukraine holding presidential elections and noted that Russia seeks to sign documents with legitimate representatives of Ukraine. He also stated that Russia does not oppose Ukraine‘s EU membership but opposes the EU becoming a military alliance.
On June 5, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin met with UK, French, and German ambassadors in Moscow, where Russia informed the three nations that Moscow considers their Ukraine policies destructive and accused them of seeking to prolong the conflict at the expense of European countries. On June 9, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that a phone call between Putin and Trump is not currently on the agenda, and the US mediation process on Ukraine is currently paused, though the US maintains contact with both Russia and Ukraine.
Peskov noted that the US has not yet briefed Russia on the details of American representatives‘ meetings with Zelensky. On the same day, Russian Ambassador to the US Alexander Darchiev stated at a Russia Day reception in Washington that Putin and Trump have made restoring normal relations between the two countries a shared objective, and despite various geopolitical challenges, the personal chemistry established between the leaders provides a foundation for rebuilding bilateral relations.
