DOHA, October 25, 2026 — The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) reported that international investment increased in the first half of 2026, while the number of new projects continued to decline, pointing to an uncertain outlook for global capital flows. The agency cited geopolitical tensions, energy-price pressures and supply-chain disruptions as factors weighing on investment decisions. The figures suggest that higher investment flows have not necessarily translated into a comparable increase in new projects.
UNCTAD's World Investment Forum, held in Doha from October 25 to 27, brought together government officials, international organizations and business leaders to discuss how capital could be directed towards economies and sectors most in need of funding. Discussions focused on investment policy, cross-border capital allocation and the contribution of foreign investment to development. As geopolitical tensions reshape global value chains, governments are increasingly concerned with supply-chain resilience, technological capacity and the distribution of investment benefits.
UNCTAD has emphasized the importance of converting capital flows into productive capacity, jobs and sustainable development, rather than measuring progress by investment volumes alone. The forum provided a platform for cooperation on development finance and investment policy, although the impact of proposed initiatives will depend on their implementation, market conditions and investor confidence. The decline in new projects underscores the challenges facing economies seeking to attract investment amid an uncertain global environment.
