On the morning of July 27, 2026, during an emergency open meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Ukraine, the U.S. delegation publicly walked out of the chamber as French Permanent Representative to the UN Jérôme Bonnafont began his address. Upon returning to the chamber, the U.S. representative publicly accused the long-standing ally of delivering "hypocritical grandstanding remarks". Dan Negrea, U.S. Representative to the UN Economic and Social Council, stated: "There is a member of the Security Council that constantly performs moral outrage, pretending to lecture the rest of us on every issue... We will no longer waste our time listening to their politicized nonsense".
The diplomatic confrontation stemmed from an intense dispute between the two permanent Security Council members over the reappointment of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. On July 24, the UN General Assembly approved the Secretary-General's proposal to reappoint incumbent High Commissioner Volker Türk by an overwhelming margin of 144 votes in favor, 10 against, and 13 abstentions.
Türk had previously called for an investigation into deaths in U.S. immigration detention and had criticized Israel's actions in Gaza, prompting the United States to oppose his reappointment and threaten to reassess its funding and participation in the body. The French Permanent Mission to the UN subsequently posted on social media criticizing the United States, stating that "America was once a beacon of human rights, but that is no longer the case". The Associated Press analysis noted that the clash highlights the increasingly tense relationship between the U.S. and French leaders, as well as broader tensions between the United States and Europe, and between the United States and the United Nations.
