On September 13, 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled a series of initiatives at the BRICS leaders’ summit in New Delhi aimed at deepening cooperation among the expanded group in artificial intelligence, trade, supply chains, economics and finance. Xi proposed a BRICS AI Open Source Zone, a partnership on special economic zones and a BRICS Service Trade Forum to be hosted by China in 2027. He also called for greater stability in industrial and supply chains and the development of a more integrated market.
The expanded bloc now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates, alongside 10 partner countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said solutions developed within BRICS should be applicable to the wider Global South, while Russian President Vladimir Putin described the group as a force for a fairer and more multipolar world order. The summit also produced a joint declaration urging maximum restraint amid tensions in the Middle East, highlighting BRICS’ growing engagement with global political as well as economic issues.
